Hello everyone. This is Laura Gilmour. I am a PhD Candidate at the University of Alberta in Canada and an autistic self-advocate. I am wanting to hear from some autistic students about their experiences with becoming more independent on campus. For instance, I know many of us (including those without autism) get our parents to help with a lot at first (course registration, signing up for services, navigating campus etc). I am wondering if any people on here can chime in about this experience or their student or young adult son/daughter’s experience. I want to do a post on this later this month including an interview with a university service provider and I’d like to include some ideas from fellow students and not have this article just be my story as autism is a diverse spectrum.
