STS is excited to present a 30-minute talk, “Improving College Outcomes: Autistic STEM Students,” at this year’s South by Southwest (SXSW) EDU conference in Austin, Texas. Editorial Board Members Arianne Garcia, John Caldora, and Sara Sanders Gardner will focus on creating a sense of belonging for students before, during, and after the college transition as a way to drive positive college outcomes. Below is a little peak at what they’ll be talking about, all the event details, and other SXSW EDU events we’re looking forward to!
Arianne, on Intersectionality:
“STEM participation among girls with developmental disabilities is an urgent issue…Autistic women of color make up a percent of a percent of the total STEM workforce.”
Sara, on the College Transition:
“Autistic students transitioning to college need the same things that all students do: support, guidance, and your belief in their ability to thrive in newfound freedoms!”
John, on Troubleshooting in College:
“As case managers, our goal is to help students succeed, navigate bureaucracy, and refer them to resources that can help them.”
